The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. This award recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree. UHS is excited to annouce that the 2024-25 recipient is Samira. Once a student is chosen as their school's DAR Good Citizen, the student is invited to participate in the scholarship portion of the program. This consists of a personal statement and an essay. Student participation in the scholarship portion of the program is optional.

United High School’s Students of the Month for October are Senior, Kellan; Junior, Aubrie; Sophomore, Quinlan; and Freshman, Donald. Kellan was nominated by Ms. Wood in recognition of his willingness to help teach junior high lessons and sparking the same love of music he has in our junior high musicians. Ms. Wood says that Kellan represents the UHS Core Values of ā€œPride, Empathy, Commitment, and Family.ā€ Aubrie was nominated by science teacher, Mrs. Menge, because of her exemplification of the UHS Core Value of ā€œCommitment." Aubrie is challenging herself this year and succeeding in the process. Quinlan was nominated by Mrs. Burgess because he is always inquisitive and interested in understanding correct technique in art. The UHS Core Value that Quinlan best represents is ā€œPride.ā€ Donald was nominated by Ms. Butler in recognition of his positivity; she says he is a ray of sunshine in this building as he always takes time to say ā€˜hello’ and ā€˜have a good day.’ Donald represents the "Family" Core Value for UHS. Congratulations to these students! Each student will receive a gift certificate good for 1 drink at Dame Fine Coffee! Thank you Dame Fine Coffee for sponsoring this program!

Thank you to all of our veterans that took time out of their day to join us for breakfast this morning at UJSHS! I shared this morning with our building an excerpt from our nation's Secretary of Defense, "On Veterans Day, we honor the extraordinary selflessness and strength of the American patriots who have served in the U.S. military. Today and every day, we give thanks to the generations of men and women who have answered the call to protect our country. They have defended our freedoms and upheld the values of liberty, justice, democracy, and the rule of law that define us as Americans. . .To all our veterans, thank you for your service. You have defended our freedoms, protected our democracy, and shown us all the true meaning of patriotism. We are forever grateful."

United High School is pleased to announce that we have six 2025-26 Illinois State Scholars: Jacob, Rachel, Madilyn, Samira, Leighton and Dylan. Approximately the top ten percent of graduates from approved high schools are announced as State Scholars each year through Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). The 2025-26 year designation given to State Scholars applies to the year students will begin their postsecondary education. The combination of their exemplary college assessment examination scores and record of high school achievement indicates they have high potential for success in college. While the accolade does not have a monetary value, being designated a State Scholar is a prestigious honor for their academic resumes.
