Super Bowl transformation was a hit with our 4th graders.

Fifth graders participated in Decimal Division Winter Olympics today to kick off the Winter Olympics. Students did 3 timed tasks and collected data. Next week we will be finding averages of our scores and tracking data from the Winter Olympics!

Our 4th grade classes participated in all kinds of Super Bowl activities today. Thank you to our teachers for always making learning engaging.

Mrs. Murray's class researched Martin Luther King Jr. The display demonstrates evidence of their learning in action.

Last week in STEAM, Mrs. Wood’s class held a bagel tasting. National Bagel Day was January 15th and students had shared that several had never tried bagels before and they would like to try them. Students sampled four different types of bagels; plain, everything, blueberry, and cinnamon raisin. Students discussed the flavors and what good descriptive words are when describing food (savory, sweet, creamy, etc.) and there was discussion on which bagels students liked and which they didn’t care for. Students also had the opportunity to sample bagels with cream cheese and without. They then graphed which bagels were liked by students and they also graphed how many students preferred cream cheese over no cream cheese. There was then a class discussion about the results and how data collection and graphs can help us compare and contrast things more easily in order to better understand topics. What a delicious way to learn!

The 5 Essentials Survey will be administered by all UIS students the week of February 23rd to February 27th. If you do NOT want your child to participate, please contact the office or fill out the opt out form linked below.

4th and 6th grade have been learning about potential and kinetic energy in STEAM and applying what they’ve learned to different tasks with dominoes. They have built chain reactions and created obstacles for the reactions to cross over and interact with. They are then making observations about where the potential energy is greatest and when the kinetic energy is greatest. Sixth grade is starting to apply what they’ve learned to real life situations like skating at a skate park. They have used an online skate park simulator to observe potential and kinetic energy used on different skate ramps and how mass and friction affect the potential and kinetic energy.

These UIS students are our January Students of the Month. They all were nominated for multiple Shooting Stars during the month of January to recognize their accomplishments and citizenship. Keep up the good work and continuing to show others the UIS way.

February 2nd - 6th is National School Counseling Week. Show your appreciation for Mrs. Logsdon by thanking her or giving her a card. Check out her favorite things on the UIS list of favorites under DOCUMENTS on the website.
