Sweating for the Community: United CUSD 304 Students Swap Summer Workouts for Tornado Cleanup

MONMOUTH, IL — In the wake of a powerful EF-1 tornado that tore through Warren County on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, leaving a trail of uprooted trees, downed power lines, and damaged structures, a different kind of force hit the streets of Monmouth the following morning.
Instead of reporting to their scheduled, summer athletic workouts, 80 student-athletes and FFA members from United CUSD 304 laced up their sneakers, grabbed work gloves, and diverted their energy directly into helping their neighbors rebuild.

Shifting Gears from the School to the Streets
The tornado, which the National Weather Service confirmed packed winds of up to 100 mph, carved a 1.3-mile path of destruction straight through the heart of Monmouth. Recognizing the immediate need in their community, school coaches, advisors, and student leaders made a swift decision: the workouts could wait.
By early morning, 80 students had mobilized. Armed with gloves, rakes, and sheer determination, the teenagers fanned out across the hardest-hit areas, including neighborhoods near Monmouth College and Warfield Park.
They spent hours hauling massive fallen tree limbs to the street's curbs for city collection, clearing debris from blocked driveways, and assisting elderly residents who were overwhelmed by the sudden devastation.

Deep Gratitude from Monmouth Residents
The impact of the students’ hard work was felt instantly—not just in the physical clearing of the streets, but in the spirits of the residents, many of whom were still without power as Ameren crews worked around the clock.
"I woke up feeling completely overwhelmed looking at my yard," said one local resident whose property was covered in heavy oak branches. "Then, out of nowhere, a small army of United students showed up. In less than an hour, they did what would have taken me weeks to do alone. I can't thank them enough."
For the students, the grueling day of manual labor was more rewarding than any standard summer conditioning program.
"We talk a lot about teamwork and character in our athletic programs and FFA," said one of the participating student-athletes. "This morning, the community needed a team. It wasn’t about lifting weights today; it was about lifting up Monmouth."

A Community Moving Forward
Thanks to the combined efforts of city public works employees, emergency crews, and the fast-acting United CUSD 304 students, the road to recovery is moving swiftly. The City of Monmouth has noted that storm-damaged limb collection will continue through July 1st, but the massive dent made by 80 pairs of helping hands gave the town a vital head start.
While the storm of 2026 will be remembered for its 100 mph winds, the residents of Monmouth will just as easily remember the day their local youth stepped off the field and onto the front lines to carry the community through.

Information gathered from the National Weather Service and WMOI Monmouth.

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, guest speaker, Jeremy Bates, will be speaking to students in grades 9-12. Mr. Bates is known as “The Hope Dealer;” this program is a one-of-a-kind prevention program that infuses live, interactive music, with thought provoking, relevant content, challenging youth and adults to make healthy choices that reflect the greatness they deserve. He takes audiences on a journey through his life to demonstrate how “H-bombs” (hope, humor, head, and heart) are at the core of the choices we make, especially those involving underage drinking and drunk driving. Arming both youth and adults with the same”H’s” that saved his life, everyone will want to join the ranks of the Hope Dealers! If you wish to not have your student partake in this event, please contact the high school office at 309-734-9411.
